La technique du spoofing désigne le recours à un faux/vrai courriel, à savoir l’utilisation frauduleuse de l’adresse électronique d’un tiers pour envoyer un message, le message étant souvent un spam doublé d’un virus ou d’un spyware (logiciel espion). Pour résumer, le message semble provenir d’une adresse bien réelle sinon officielle, détournée pour l’occasion, afin que l’usager tombe dans le panneau. Cette technique permet de récupérer des informations sur le/la propriétaire de la machine infectée, par exemple ses codes d’accès bancaires. Le spoofing est souvent couplé avec le phishing ("hameçonnage").
